This project, implemented simultaneously across multiple components, was one of the most complex and significant infrastructure undertakings in Lithuania due to several key aspects. Below is an overview of the project’s main achievements and benefits:

1. The Most Complex Road Interchange in Lithuania with the Highest Traffic Intensity

  • Traffic volume: The section had an extremely high daily traffic intensity – 58,817 vehicles per day (AADT), including 7,276 heavy vehicles. On peak days, traffic volumes reached up to 78,000 vehicles/day.
  • Traffic safety: Throughout construction, both traffic directions maintained two lanes each, ensuring uninterrupted flow and transit capabilities.

2. Collaboration with Two Major Clients

  • The project was carried out in cooperation with Via Lietuva and the Kaunas City Municipality Administration, enabling more effective coordination and ensuring that both national and local interests were considered.

3. Separation of Transit and Local Traffic Flows

  • Connector roads were designed to separate the A1 motorway transit traffic from Kaunas city’s local traffic, reducing congestion on city streets, improving safety, and allowing residents easier access to their destinations.

4. Economic and Technical Benefits

  • Reduced travel time and operating costs: With smoother traffic and better infrastructure, travel time decreased and throughput increased, resulting in significant economic advantages.
  • Lower accident rates: The separation of traffic flows created safer road conditions, leading to a reduction in traffic incidents.

5. Engineering Solutions

  • Stormwater drainage system: Surface runoff collection networks were installed to ensure proper drainage and reduce flooding risks.
  • Lighting networks: Enhanced visibility during nighttime improved overall road safety.

6. Environmental Solutions

  • Noise barriers: Noise pollution was reduced, especially in residential areas, improving living conditions for local communities.

The implementation of the “Mega” Interchange project (A1 motorway from 100.47 to 101.79 km) was critical from both technical and environmental perspectives. The construction of connector roads and separation of transit and local traffic flows significantly improved safety, reduced accident rates, and achieved important economic and ecological benefits. Safer road design and environmental measures ensured long-term value for both residents and the transportation sector.
