Parameters:
7.56 km of road converted into a motorway | 14 km of fencing installed to prevent wildlife intrusion | 10.5 km of safety road barriers installed | 19 acceleration/deceleration lanes reconstructed | 8 gantries installed for speed management and warning systems

The reconstruction of the Main Road A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda, section from 87.44 km to 95.00 km, was carried out with the goal of improving traffic safety, capacity, and overall convenience. The section was upgraded to meet higher traffic standards in line with modern transport infrastructure requirements, ensuring a safer and faster travel experience for both drivers and pedestrians.

Reconstructed Elements:

  1. Underground pedestrian crossings
Previously, this section lacked safe pedestrian crossings. New underground pedestrian passages were installed to ensure worry-free, safe pedestrian movement and eliminate dangerous interactions with road traffic.
  2. Wildlife protection
The previous road section lacked sufficient measures to prevent wildlife from entering the roadway. As part of the project, protective fences and barriers were installed to prevent animal crossings and enhance traffic safety.
  3. Acceleration and deceleration lanes
The geometric parameters of the old lanes were inadequate. New acceleration and deceleration lanes were built in accordance with motorway standards, ensuring smoother and safer vehicle entry and exit.
  4. Safety barriers
The central reservation barriers did not meet the required containment level. These were replaced with higher-standard safety barriers to ensure better protection for road users and vehicles.
  5. Speed limit increase
The speed limit before reconstruction was 110 km/h. After completion of the project, the limit was raised to 130 km/h, reducing travel time and increasing road capacity.

Project Benefits:

  • Increased traffic safety
Safety for both pedestrians and drivers significantly improved. The addition of underground crossings and wildlife protection measures drastically reduced the risk of accidents involving animals or pedestrians.
  • Faster and more convenient travel
With a higher speed limit and improved acceleration/deceleration lanes, travel time was shortened and traffic flow became more efficient. Travelers can now reach their destinations more quickly and comfortably.
  • Higher infrastructure standards
The project enhanced road infrastructure, providing safer and more user-friendly conditions for all road users.
  • Economic growth
Improved road infrastructure supports economic development by enabling faster and more reliable transportation, boosting trade, tourism, and logistics across the region.

The implementation of this project has significantly improved safety, traffic capacity, and comfort. Key advantages include safe pedestrian routes, protection against wildlife, and improved driving conditions that enhance travel speed and safety—ensuring better traffic flow management.
