Reconstruction of the Žiežmariai grade-separated interchange on the A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda highway was carried out to improve traffic safety and conditions. The project aimed to enhance the efficiency of road infrastructure, reduce the risk of traffic incidents, and ensure smooth traffic flow for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Project Objectives and Solutions:
- Construction of a Tunnel Viaduct:
A tunnel viaduct was built to eliminate the left-turn lane, which previously posed safety risks. This allows safe and uninterrupted crossings, improving overall traffic flow and connectivity. - Installation of a Pedestrian Overpass:
A pedestrian viaduct was installed to separate pedestrian movement from the main carriageway, ensuring safe crossing without direct interaction with traffic. This is especially important in areas near residential neighborhoods with high pedestrian activity. - Elimination of a High-Risk Area:
The reconstruction eliminated one of Lithuania’s black spots—an area with a high rate of accidents. This significantly improves traffic safety and reduces the number of traffic collisions at this location. - Removal of Speed Restrictions:
With the elimination of the left-turn lane and implementation of new traffic management solutions, the need for speed restrictions was removed. This restored standard speed limits, contributing to smoother and faster traffic flow.
